Before
deciding on pursuing with IVF, you should have a fair idea on how to prepare
yourself for it. Prior to the main procedure, the women have to first undergo
an ovarian reserve testing. In this the blood sample of the woman is taken and it
is tested for the amount of follicle stimulating hormone or FSH in it. The
doctor will be able to ascertain the quality and the size of the woman’s eggs
from the results of the test. A thorough examination of the uterus will also
take place so that the doctors can get to know the health
of the uterus. This is done by ultrasound technology which makes use of high
frequency sound waves to form an image of the uterus. An alternate method of
creating an image of the uterus is to insert a scope all the way through the
vagina to the uterus. These images help the doctor determine which way the
embryos should be implanted to ensure maximum chances of pregnancy.
Your
partner will need a thorough sperm testing. The semen sample of your partner
will be taken and the lab will analyse it for the size, shape and the number of
sperm. If the sperm count is low, or the sperm are weak or damaged, a special
technique called the intracytoplasmic sperm injection or ICSI would be
required. In this process a technician will insert a single sperm directly into
the egg using a special needle or injection.
Risks
Any medical
procedure comes with a set of risks and complications. The ones associated with
IVF are miscarriage, ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome, multiple pregnancies
which will cause premature birth and low birth weight of the children, ectopic
pregnancy where the embryo gets implanted outside of the uterus. Infection,
bleeding or damage to the bladder or bowels can also happen though it is pretty
rare.
