IVF or in
vitro fertilisation is a set of complex procedures which are performed on a
patient who has problems regarding the conception or a child and other
fertility problems. Some genetic problems are also treated by this procedure. IVF
has been found to be one of the most effective forms of assistance to reproductive
technology. This procedure can be performed by using your own egg and the sperm
of your partner or the eggs and sperms from a donor. In some special cases,
there might be a need of a gestational carrier, who is a woman who carries the
embryo in her uterus instead of the mother due to some medical conditions.
You can’t
just expect to have a healthy baby by doing IVF. The chances of everything
going right and you having a perfectly healthy baby will depend on quite a few
factors. The reason for your infertility and your age are one of the main
factors. Furthermore the whole procedure is quite expensive, time consuming and
also invasive, so most of the times more than one embryois placed in the uterus
so that there is a chance of atleast one getting implanted. But this might
result in multiple pregnancy too where more than one embryo gets implanted.
Why is IVF done?
IVF can
help with many fertility issues and help the woman conceive a baby. But it
might not be the right process for you always. Your doctor will help you know
better whether you are suitable for the procedure or not. Mostly it is used for
ovulation disorders, endometriosis, fallopian tube blockage or damage,
premature ovarian failure, uterine fibroids, impaired sperm function or
production, genetic disorders, removal of the tube or previous tubal
sterilization, unexplained infertility, preservation of fertility for certain
health conditions such as cancer. People suffering from these kinds of
disorders can resort to IVF.
