In vitro
fertilisation or IVF is used as a treatment option for various cases of
infertility as it increases the chances of pregnancy. In this process the
oocytes or the eggs of the woman are taken and fertilised with the sperm
outside the body. Later on the embryo is placed inside the uterus of the woman
to attain pregnancy.
IVF might not be able to solve all types of
infertility problems, but some cases can be treated, such as endometriosis,
blocked fallopian tubes, irregular of absent ovulation. Moreover if the man has
low sperm count or some other semen parameters that aren’t normal, IVF is
recommended.
How does the procedure take place?
1.
Ovarian Stimulation-
You have to visit the clinic on the appropriate day on her menstrual cycle
and several hormones will be administered like follicle stimulating hormone and
luteinizing hormone which will stimulate the ovaries. After enough mature
follicles have formed, hcg or human chorionic gonadotropin will be administered
to transform the follicles into eggs.
2.
Egg Retrieval-
About 36 hours after the administration of hcg the retrieval of the egg
will take place. The eggs will be taken through a small needle which is passed
in the vagina and it takes up the fluid along with the eggs.
3. Fertilisation-
After examining the oocytes to be mature, the embryologist combines them
with the sperm obtained from your partner or even a sperm donor. After
approximately 18 hours, they are again examined to verify whether they have
fertilised or not.
4.
Embryo Transfer-
Three days post the egg retrieval you have to return to the clinic to
have the embryo transferred. The healthiest looking embryos will get
transferred.
5.
Progesterone Supplementation-
After the transfer, progesterone supplements will be given to maintain
the early pregnancies. And after about two weeks the pregnancy tests are taken
to confirm the pregnancy.
