Conventional Hyperstimulation IVF Treatment

A conventional IVF protocol entails daily injections of hormone medications to produce multiple egg follicles.

Fertility Medications – Gonadotropins

IVF treatment process

Surgical Egg Retrieval

Eggs are surgically aspirated from follicles while the patient is under anesthesia.
  • A hollow needle is passed through the wall of the vagina to reach the ovaries
  • The needle is guided to the ovaries with the use of a vaginal ultrasound probe
  • The needle is guided into each of the follicles where the eggs reside
  • The fluid from each follicle is aspirated and placed into a test tube
  • The fluid is taken to the laboratory and inspected under a microscope to locate the egg
While the egg retrieval procedure is being performed, the patient’s partner’s sperm specimen is collected (or thawed) and prepared for fertilization of the eggs in vitro or IVF treatment.

ICSI Fertilization of the Eggs

The procedure known as Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection (ICSI) is used to individually fertilize each egg for optimal results. ICSI is used to maximize the rate of fertilization and lessen the chances of sperm not being able to penetrate the wall of the egg.

Embryos Cultured to the Blastocyst Stage for Transfer

An embryo reaching the blastocyst stage is one having grown in the laboratory for five to six days.
  • After the ICSI procedure, the fertilized egg is placed into its incubator
  • The egg is then later inspected under a microscope for signs indicative of fertilization
  • After fertilization has been confirmed, the embryos are transferred to a special growth fluid and monitored via HRSS technology
  • The embryos are then allowed to develop into high quality embryos for transfer and/or cryopreservation
  • On the third day of culture, genetic testing can be performed to rule out inheritable diseases and chromosomal abnormalities, as well as to confirm each embryo’s gender
  • Embryos continue to be cultured in the laboratory until they reach a quality stage of development – up to 6 days (blastocyst stage)
  • The embryo transfer is then scheduled on a set date
  • Progesterone is self-administered daily to help prepare the patient’s uterine lining for implantation of the fertilized egg – the embryo
  • After the embryo transfer, a pregnancy test through a blood draw is scheduled on a date set two week out by the fertility specialist
